Wrought Iron fencing is a term used to describe black painted or coated mild steel fencing. True wrought iron hasn't been massed produced since around the 1900's. While some artisanal and historical fencing is out there, the vast majority of fencing of this type is modern painted mild steel. This fencing is usually installed in pre-built panels, and like any commercial product you get what you pay for.
Most of the fence panels feature joints that are not fully welded. This is a cost savings for the manufacturer and the customer, but it often leads to water infiltration on the lower joints. This is particularly common on fencing in yards with sprinklers. This water infiltration results in rust, that over time becomes a serious issue. Rusting can lead to the bottom rail separating from the pickets, the main post, or both. And even more troubling is when the main post itself begins to rust out, threating the structural integrity of the entire fence.
The two most common repairs are repairing the bottom rail, and repairing the main posts. Often times both are required as the rust from the bottom rail has spread to the main post, and damaged it to the point where there is no good metal left to weld to.
A Texas staple, pipe fence is a functional and aesthetic for many here in Texas. Built from a variety of different sizes, finishes, and types of piping, a pipe fence is a unique piece of work. Often times built from reclaimed oil field pipe, a pipe fence can harbor a few nasty surprises for the home or property owner.
Oil field pipe whether drill stem, sucker rod, casing, or any other type of pipe lives a tough life. Constant exposure to moisture, chemicals, abrasion, and even salt water can take a tremendous toll on the structure of the pipe. Oil field pipe is used on the job until it absolutely can't be, so pipe fences made from oil field pipe can expect to see some structural failures.
Most pipe fencing repairs fall into one of two categories, replacement or patching. Replacing an entire piece of pipe whether the upright or a rail with fresh pipe is usually the best long term option. Patching a hole, split seam, or other defect is a usually preferable if it's caught early before the problem becomes too big.
